Freddy, the mayor of Sharon, Wisconsin, starts his day. (Photo credit: Mike De Sisti) |
It's 8 a.m. and Freddy the mayor is up and ready to greet the citizens of Sharon, Wisconsin. The devoted mayor makes the rounds of the village, stopping for a chin rub or to chat with his constituents. Occasionally he'll break from his busy work schedule to catch some mice.
The mayor of Sharon is a ginger tabby, a former homeless cat, who now lives and works in the Village Hall. At his office, he welcomes citizens of the small town when they come to pay their taxes or water bills.
About 3 or 4 years ago, the cat started visiting the Village Hall. Deputy clerk/treasurer Jaymie Kunkel noticed the stray cat and gave him some treats. She named him. Freddy soon made the Village Hall his official residence.
As reported by the Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal Sentinel, Freddy meows to go out twice a day to make his tour of the town. He visits the post office, restaurants and a tavern.
"This is his town," said Scott Vinke, Sharon's Postmaster, "Everyone looks out for him. If he's crossing the street, everybody stops and gives him the right of way. He's the mayor."Watch the video of Freddy the mayor, here.
